In an opinionated rant, I want to vent a little bit about this garbage:
I’m sure everyone that’s ever used the web has come across this kind of thing frequently.
I’m trying to work. I don’t care about your new features. This is just a distraction. This only slows me down, and it makes me hate your site. (As if I didn’t already have plenty of reason to hate Stack Exchange, the most toxic community on the web apart from maybe Twitter and /r/programming.)
When I’m trying to search for a solution to a problem, I need to go through several sites in a short amount of time. Everything that slows me down even a little adds up significantly to the amount of time it takes me to solve this problem and the general amount of stress it takes to solve the problem. This is a big part of the overall problem of the web becoming unusable.
I understand reasonable ads– That’s fine. But this isn’t even an ad. It benefits nobody and it gets in my way. And I’m seeing this on virtually every site I visit.
Ublock origin mitigates some of the damage here, but really not enough. I still have to make a point to block every individual website.
One of the projects that I’d like to do in the future is a search engine that’s geared specifically for software developers. It would stop second-guessing the search strings and would downrank websites with user-hostile interfaces like this. Some of the more horrific sites like “Geeks For Geeks” and “Experts’ Exchange” would just be excluded from the search altogether. Maybe it’ll turn out to be over my head, but it’s at least worth a shot.
